You sit on your balcony one fine Wednesday morning, sipping your coffee, when a call comes in from a company you interviewed for. “We’re pleased to offer you a place in our company,” you hear them saying. You break into a happy dance and ask them for a day to give your answer. Smart move, because there are multiple factors you must consider before saying yes to a new job offer. Before you make your decision, read about these 7 warning signs that scream, "Run away from that job offer!"
Unusual office culture
Remember when you asked for a walkthrough of the office at your job interview? There were two guys in full Stormtrooper gear, and one office cubicle was an exact replica of the Oval Office. You immediately felt that you would not fit in with the office culture. It is a better idea to reconsider a job offer if you don’t feel comfortable with the workplace culture.
Lack of work-life balance
You find several former employee reviews of the company that talk about how they had to camp out in the office three nights in a row or how they survived a full day on caffeine alone because of the workload. If lack of work-life balance seems to be the common theme of all employee reviews, you need to seriously reconsider joining this company.
Outdated office appliances
You noticed how the coffee machines were run-down, and how all of the vending machines were broken but one when you visited the office for the interview. If the employer believes that the office can run on relics of bulky computers from the early 2000s, they are likely not invested in the well-being of their employees. This is a glaring employment red flag that you must immediately run away from.
Disappearing employee benefits
The employer listed a whole bunch of things in the employee benefits package in their job description that you thought were too good to be true. When you review the employment benefits document you received with the job offer, you notice that it is indeed too good to be true. The dental plan and daycare facilities are completely absent from the company's benefits package. This is a clear indication that the employer doesn’t stick to their word.
The absent manager
You talk to a couple of employees about what it is like to work at the company, and they all mention their mysterious manager. No one on the floor has met this manager. The manager communicates solely via emails that they send in the middle of the night and is nowhere to be found when the project team runs into a problem. This is a clear sign that you will be left without direction in your role once you join the company.
The endless meetings
Your friend who works at the company sends you screenshots from the company WhatsApp group where everyone is joking about the weekly “Meeting Marathon.” Apparently, the employees are supposed to attend 6 meetings a week at this new place. How would you ever get things done if you were constantly getting called in for a meeting as soon as you sit down to do your job?
Casual Fridays that are a step too steep for you
You visit the company on a Friday and get confronted by a guy in a T-Rex costume. You ride the elevator with Darth Vader and Count Dracula and get escorted to the interview room by Cleopatra. The whole casual Friday doesn’t seem like your cup of tea to you.
