What are your priorities for a rewarding career?
Priorities are important when making critical career decisions. However, there are a multitude of priorities you must focus on. Here are a few priorities that we would like you to consider:
- Personal – Passion, Self-Esteem, Identity, Meaning, Achieving your potential
- Social – Power, Appreciation, Fame, Inclusion, Approval, Respect, Status
- Lifestyle – Flexibility, Ease, Means, Freedom, Balance
- Practical - Being not in debt, Having food, Security, Affording rent, Paying bills
- Moral – Impact, Well-being of loved ones, Improving the future, Reducing suffering
Task 1: Go through each of the sections and define what each of them means to you. The examples we have listed for each factor will not be valid for your unique case. Determining what each of these means to you will help steer you in the direction of a career that allows you to achieve that.
Are you giving your best at your current job?
Did you know that excelling in what you do daily is a form of self-fulfillment? The way you perform in your job will determine how you feel about your job. That means you are likely to get fed up with your current job if you are not giving it your best or even making a worthwhile effort for it.
Task 2: Reflect on your work ethic. How have your work ethics changed in the past few years? A change in work ethic will have you hating a job that you initially loved.
What’s your daily agenda like?
Your daily agenda can tell us a lot about you as a person. More importantly, it can show us how much of a work-life balance you have. Do you have a habit of sitting down at your desk at 7 am and getting back up at 9 pm? Then, it is safe to say that you don’t have a good work-life balance.
Task 3: Prioritize your work-life balance. Starting today, you are going to make time each day to do something that brings you joy. This new time you set aside is not for you to get your errands done. It is for an activity that will recharge and energize you.
Do you let yourself take a break?
Have you heard of how experienced authors get writer’s block from time to time? How do they come out of it? They take a step back and concentrate on other things than writing. Once their minds are relaxed, the writing comes back to them naturally.
Task 4: Set aside some time for self-care. Taking care of yourself is the best thing you can do to clear your mind. Once your mind is at peace, you will find it easier to choose a career that’s rewarding.
