How to answer Why do you want this job

You’re at an interview for your dream job. The interview is going smoothly so far. You answer all the questions impeccably, and the interviewer seems to like you. Then they drop a question you weren’t expecting: Why do you want this job? While your first thought will be to reply, “For the cash, to pay my bills,” we strongly advise you not to lead your answer with that thought.

First, you need to think about why the interviewer asked this question of you. What do they want to know? The intent behind this question is to gauge how interested you are in this position. It will let them get to know you better when they know your reasons for wanting to work with them.

You will need to emphasize how you add value to the team and the company with your answer. And you need to show that you are enthusiastic about working with them. Before you start formulating your answer, try to ask these questions from yourself:

  • Why is the employer appealing to you?
  • How does the new role fit your skills?
  • How does this job help your career plan?
  • How will you develop professionally through this job?

Then, you will need to write down your answers to each of these questions. Once you have all the answers ready, you can combine them into one lengthy answer. When you answer the questions, you can begin each answer as:

  • “This job really appeals to me because…”
  • “I already have X, Y, and Z skills, which will help me perform excellently in this role.”
  • “I am excited about this opportunity because I will get to…”
  • “This role will help me develop my career through…”

Keep these tips in your mind when you craft your answer

Show your interest in the company

When you give your answer, show that you are really interested in the company and this is not just another job for you. Conduct your own research about the employer’s vision, mission, and values. Find the values of the employer that align with your passions. Choose one or two of these key factors to mention in your answer.

Talk about your skillset

Give an insight into your key skills and experiences which make you a formidable candidate for the position. Show the employer how you can use your skills to add value to the team and the company. You need to mention the skills that are necessary for the job when you answer this question. If you have a professional achievement related to the scope of the role, work that into your answer as well.

Mention your career progression

How does this job fit into your long-term career goals? Which parts of the job do you admire more? What job duties can teach valuable lessons for your career? Talk about how and why you appreciate the company culture and mention how you are planning to pursue additional training to perform better at the role.
