Put Projects On A Resume

How to discuss projects on your resume

Did you know that mentioning the projects you have completed as a professional is one of the most effective ways to showcase skills, experience, and qualifications on your resume? Creating a dedicated projects section for your resume also allows you to add valuable keywords that might not be mentioned within the work experience section. Here’s how you can discuss projects on your resume:

Choose the right projects

Depending on their relevance, scale, and complexity, you need to choose the most important and most relevant projects you have completed to be displayed on your resume. Here are a few things to consider when selecting projects for your resume:

  • Relevance – Does the project reflect important skills, experiences, and knowledge areas relevant to the new job?
  • Impact – What kind of an impact did the results of your project have on your employer? Can you quantify the impact using numbers?
  • Recency – How long ago was the project completed? Are the skills and experience obsolete now? Even if it is an older project, does it add value to your resume?

Structure the descriptions

Instead of simply listing the project title and mentioning that you completed it successfully on your resume, try to describe it in a way that adds value to your job application. Here’s how you can draft a well-structured description for important projects that you want to highlight on your resume:

  • Title – Give your project a strong title that describes the nature and scope of the venture.
  • Role – Ensure that your role within the project is clearly stated to avoid confusion.
  • Objective – What were the goals of the project? Briefly mention what you planned to achieve with the project.
  • Action – This is where the details come in. Describe which actions you took to complete the project. Incorporate skills and experiences.
  • Result – Mention the outcome of the project and how it affected the business. Use numbers to quantify the results that you obtained.

Use the STAR method

The STAR method is a common resume writing best practice, and we use it all the time to narrate complex situations simply and concisely. You can use this method to highlight your professional achievements when discussing projects on your resume:

  • Situation – Give a brief intro about the content of the project. What key issues did the employer want you to address with the project?
  • Task – Outline the specific role and responsibilities you had throughout the scope of the project briefly.
  • Action – Now, you can mention the specific actions you took to complete the project. Focus on skills, tools, and ideas.
  • Result – Conclude by explaining the results of the project. What were the measurable benefits? What kind of an impact did they have on the employer?

Incorporate keywords

Once you have described your projects in detail on your resume, it is time for you to start thinking about adding keywords. Read your descriptions carefully. Do they align with the requirements listed by the employer in the job description? If not, it is time for you to rewrite the descriptions incorporating the relevant keywords from the job description.
