Traditionally, in the US, we do not include headshots on our resumes unless when applying for a job in acting or modeling, where physical appearance matters. When we work with our clients, we discourage them from adding headshots to their resumes to prevent discrimination.
If you belong to the following professions, you should add a headshot to your resume:
Actors and Models
For those applying for jobs as actors or models, it is necessary to add a headshot to their resume as a part of their portfolio. You should ensure that you use a high-quality image that represents your appearance accurately to suit the job you are applying for.
Business Professionals
Did you know that business professionals from some countries add headshots to their resumes as a custom? If you are applying for a job in Japan, South Korea, or another East Asian country, it is better to add a photograph to your resume. Ensure that the picture you use is professional.
Creative Professionals
If you are applying for a creative job in fashion design or any other field where you need to emphasize your unique style, you can add a photograph to your resume. Choose an artistic and expressive photograph to bring out your spirit.
Adding a photograph to your resume…
When you want to add a headshot to your resume, you should use a photograph that is professional and high-quality. Here’s what you need to do:
1. Hire a professional photographer
Your friend can probably take a photo for you with their iPhone. But a professional photographer knows just how to play with the camera. Did you know that the right focal length and camera angle will do wonders for your appearance in your headshot?
2. Choose a professional and conservative look
You should always aim to maintain your professionalism through your headshot, especially if you are using it to apply for a corporate job. Avoid revealing clothes and fancy jewelry. You will need to wear a suit or business attire and arrange your hair properly before taking the photograph.
3. Use good lighting
Don’t let your face be in the shadows. Use good lighting for your photograph. It is best to take your headshot in natural light. Your photographer will also use professional lighting equipment to bring out the best in your photo.
4. Choose the right background
Don’t let the background of your photograph distract the hiring manager. Ensure that you use a simple and plain background for your photograph. Often, it is good to use a white or grey wall as your background.
5. Pay attention to the composition
The composition of your photograph matters a lot. Watch how the photo is framed. Are your head and shoulders placed on the photograph in a way that they fill the frame?
6. Maintain a neutral expression
You don’t need to scowl on your headshot to be taken seriously. Instead of making any exaggerated facial expressions, face your photo with a natural smile. You can also go for a neutral expression. Take care not to seem too casual or too serious in your photo.
7. Retouch the photograph
Ask your photographer to retouch the photograph before you use it for your resume. This will ensure that your headshot looks professional. Your photographer will adjust the brightness or contrast of your picture and crop it to the right size for your resume.
