Women Are Urged To Upskill To Keep From Losing Their Jobs To AI And Automation

Artificial intelligence and automation are being used more and more by employers to replace human workers, most of whom are women. A majority of the workers who lose jobs due to the advance in AI and automation are female, according to industrial surveys.

Experts are urging workers, especially female workers, to upskill themselves to remain employed despite the development of AI in the workplace. In the earlier days, automation was all about replacing factory workers on production lines. Some automation techniques focused on replacing retail sales workers by establishing self-check-out at supermarkets.

The data discovered by Pearson shows that roles such as medical receptionist, accountant, and personal assistant are also being slowly swapped out by AI and automation. Among the jobs that are highly affected by AI and automation are receptionists, waiters, bank workers, and retail sales assistants.

One common thing about all these roles is that they tend to be more female-oriented. This implies that female workers have a higher affinity for being negatively impacted by technological advances in the work environment.

For example, up until a few years ago, the job of a translator was done by workers who listened to or read content and translated it out in voice or text. But today, there are hundreds of voice recognition software that perform this job for free. Due to this, more translators will choose to work as proofreaders in the future.

The majority, 70%, of the national service Polaron are female workers, some of whom are older translators unable to keep up with the latest tech advances. A lot of these women are falling back because they are not updated with the technology. Since the industry is highly competitive, these women don’t stand a chance of earning as much as they did as translators, when they work as proofreaders.

According to Pearson's analysis, more than 10% of the scope of translators today will be automated by 2032, especially in female-oriented industries.

By the year 2030, AI will replace almost half of the work done today. Even creative jobs such as illustration and songwriting are being taken over by AI.

Workers claim that they have not been trained enough to deal with digital advances. By 2027, around 13% of accountant work will be automated. This case will be worse for bookkeeping, where almost 20% automation is expected in the next five years.

Experts believe that automation wouldn’t necessarily lower the number of workers and would leave experienced workers with more time to complete complex work that the software is not touching.

AI is taking over menial jobs from workers and leaving them to undertake bigger, and more complex tasks. AI is being developed today to perform tasks such as approving home and car loans for financial companies, performing repetitive accounting tasks for accounting firms, and creating personalized marketing messages based on the digital footprint of people. Even tasks like creative writing are being taken over by AI, and companies are cutting down on their writers.

If you are working in an industry that is being rapidly automated, it is imperative that you learn new skills and upskill yourself with the necessary related knowledge to survive in the job market in the future.
